OneNote Dark Mode - Finally!

Beginning in June 2019, Microsoft Office Insiders can start using the long-promised Dark Mode for the UWP version of OneNote. (In case you don't follow the link, the UWP version is the only version still being developed. Eventually, the Office 365 version will go the way of Clippy.)

How to enable OneNote Dark Mode

  • Get OneNote for free! Works on Windows 7 or later and OS X Yosemite 10.10 or later.
  • . this is not currently an option for iOS, Android or OSX versions of OneNote, your only option is to use OneDrive syncing. Enabling OneDrive sync for a local notebook. Note the misleading message.
  • Well, here is a one way to open a Windows OneNote notebook in the OSX version of Onenote. I am particularly interested in opening a Notebook located on a Sharepoint server in a corporate environment and this met my needs. This article describes the technique.

To turn on Dark Mode, follow these steps:

  1. Click on the Settings ellipsis icon in the upper right corner of the ribbon.
  2. Click Options and select Dark under the Color section.

Plus, if your Windows Mode is already in the Dark color scheme - something I cover in the video lesson below - then you can also select 'Use my Windows Mode' to enable in OneNote.

Why Use Dark Mode?

Because you're an iconoclast? Because you listened to a lot of Nine Inch Nails and Tool back in college? Because you're rooting for the Sith?

Whatever your reasons, most people on Team Dark Side say it's because Dark Mode is easier on the eyes. The thinking is that it reduces eye fatigue - especially at night - because screens set to Dark Mode emit less blue light.

For their part, Apple claims that Dark Mode (in OSX and now available in iOS) 'makes it easier to stay focused on your work, because your content stands out while darkened controls and windows recede into the background.'

Me, I just think it's cool to change things up once in a while... and also think it's cool to leave your damn phone out of your bedroom.

Seriously. Shut that thing down every once in a while, man.

And to learn all about toggling on Dark Mode, check out the video below. As you'll see, just because you enable it in teh operating system doesn't mean it's enabled for all apps.
